National Breastfeeding Awareness Month, celebrated every August across the country, aims at empowering women to commit to breastfeeding. After learning the numerous benefits of breastfeeding, Christina decided to breastfeed. As emotionally intense as it is, breastfeeding her twins is the bravest and the most selfless thing Cristina has ever done.
Imagine that you and your spouse just immigrated to New York City, far away from close family and friends who you relied on for support. And then you find out you are pregnant. Where do you look for guidance? Like many first-time moms who participate in the NFP program, Siby needed much support during her pregnancy and after her daughter was born.
Mother’s Day is a time we celebrate the bonds we have with the women in our lives who personify wisdom, strength, love, and joy. But for many first-time low-income mothers, this day brings about feelings of fear and hopelessness. “The bond I have with my daughter is something I never imagined, thanks to my nurse from Public Health Solutions’ Nurse-Family Partnership® program.”
We recently held a graduation for families who completed our Nurse-Family Partnership® (NFP) program this year. Not only are our graduates super heroes, we believe our dedicated nurses home visitors are heroes as well.
First Lady Chirlane McCray and Queens Borough President Melinda Katz were joined today at NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens by Health Commissioner Dr. Mary T. Bassett and ACS Commissioner David A. Hansell to announce the donation of 1,000 new Pack ‘N Play portable cribs, or “Katz’s Cradles,” to provide more Queens families with a safe sleep surface for their infants.
When Christina learned she was pregnant, she was filled with both joy and panic. She didn’t know who to learn from, or who to lean on. Christina turned to the Healthy Families program that was in her community.
For most of Asha’s adult life, she had a steady job and roof over her head. A few years ago, she experienced a whirlwind of life events that seemed to go from bad to worse. While Asha had little control over much of her life, her shelter was in the neighborhood of PHS Reproductive Health Center.
Families like Ulivia’s family face a great deal of barriers to eating well. She believes that it is the support of her local WIC Center that has launched her and her family on to a healthier path.
